Expanded Functions Dental Assistant Certification and Other Specialties
Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Wisconsin for a More Impressive Résumé
Different states have different job titles and levels of certification for dental assistants. Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) and Expanded Duty Dental Assistant (EDDA) are simply different job titles used in other states for dental assistants who have received additional education and can perform additional tasks and duties.
In Wisconsin, dental assistants are not required to have any certification or license, and the titles EFDA and EDDA are not used. However, there are several other certifications available for Wisconsin dental assistants who want to specialize in a particular area, boost their résumés with additional credentials, or attain jobs requiring higher qualifications. Certifications available in Wisconsin for dental assistants with expanded duties are:
- NELDA (National Entry Level Dental Assistant)
- CDA (Certified Dental Assistant)
- COA (Certified Orthodontic Assistant)
- CPFDA (Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant)
- CRFDA (Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant)
Learn more about the NELDA and CDA certifications in Wisconsin.
Weekend Dental Assistant School gives you a strong foundation to begin building your career and, if you so choose, preparing for the exams needed to become a COA, CPFDA, or CRFDA. There are different experience and education requirements for each certification. See the DANB’s eligibility requirements for these exams.
Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA)
Orthodontic assistants, of course, assist orthodontists. They may make impressions, adjust braces, take x-rays, and more. COA examination consists of the OA (Orthodontic Assisting) exam and the ICE (Infection Control) exam.
Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant (CPFDA)
CPFDAs are qualified to perform certain duties related to preventive dentistry. To become certified, you must pass four exams:
- CP (Coronal Polish)
- SE (Sealants)
- TA (Topical Anesthetic)
- TF (Topical Fluoride)
Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA)
CRFDAs can perform tasks related to the topics of the six exams required:
- AMP (Anatomy, Morphology, and Physiology)
- IM (Impressions)
- TMP (Temporaries)
- IS (Isolation)
- SE (Sealants)
- RF (Restorative Functions)
