Choosing the Right Dental Office for You
A common misconception upon dental assistant school graduation and entering into the dental assisting career world is every dental office is the same. This couldn’t be more untrue. Differences lie in the size of the practice, the type of dentist(s) for whom you work for and the values and practices of your dentist. All of these factors among others can affect your career happiness and determine if you’re working in the right office for you.
Size of Dental Practice
The size of the dental office you work for can play a major role in determining your comfort level, hours and happiness at work. Dental offices range from small, single-doctor clinics to larger, multi-doctor clinics. Some clinics (often larger clinics) are HMO practices chosen as a complying clinic for monthly premium insurance providers. These dentists are essentially employees of a health plan. Other clinics provide to fee-for-service insurance carriers. These plans typically require an annual deductible before they begin to reimburse covered services on a case by case basis. Hours of operation and full time vs. part time position availability can be affected based on the size of the clinic you work for and the number of dentists within the clinic.
Type of Dentistry
There are many different types of dentistry. Each type of dentist needs a dental assistant. You could work side by side with a general practice dentist, a pediatric dentist, an orthodontist, an oral surgeon, a cosmetic dentist, and the list goes on and on. Make sure you choose a practice you are fully confident and comfortable with. Certain types of dentistry can appeal to each dental assistant differently, and each dental assistant has their own strengths and weaknesses.
Values and Practices of Your Dentist
You need to fully agree and stand behind the values and practices of the dentist you are working alongside of in order to be happy in your workplace. Each dental clinic may have different policies, work ethics, organizational procedures and common practice values depending on the dentist(s). Make sure you are comfortable with the way your dentist works and the policies of your clinic. If you don’t feel in sync with your dentist or don’t feel like the clinic is a good fit, you may want to find a different dentist or clinic to work with.
