Michigan Area Endodontic Dental Assistant Training
Dental Assistant Training in Just 10 Weeks
While the responsibilities of a dental assistant may typically be the same, there are several specialty offices assistants can choose to work in. One in particular is working for an Endodontist which is a dentist skilled in diagnosing and treating tooth pain and performing root canal treatment. An endodontic dental assistant works for these specialized dentists.
To become an endodontist, an applicant must graduate from an accredited dental school, and then complete the states required postgraduate training in an endodontic special practice area. Endodontists must also be licensed in the state where they practice, and must continue to stay current with education requirements. Endodontics is one of the nine specialty areas in dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).
In addition to necessary industry certifications and education, being an endodontic dental assistant requires excellent time management, communication and technical skills. While a previous background supporting an endodontist is helpful it’s not required. Dental Assistants, once hired, may receive further on-the-job training to learn job specific tasks.
What Does an Endodontic Dental Assistant Do?
The roles of an endodontist assistant may be similar to general dental office responsibilities with the addition of assisting the Endodontist before, during and after a root canal. During these procedures, an assistant may clean the patient’s mouth, pass instruments to the dentist, and monitor the patient’s wellbeing and comfort. Assistants gather information about each patient’s history, preparing them for and assisting with treatment helping to support the best outcome among patients and dentists.
Dental Assistant Responsibilities Include (may vary per office):
- Greet patients, go over medical history and ensure comfort before any procedures are performed
- Take any dental radiographs necessary (x-rays)
- Prepare patients for treatment
- Retrieve, set up and organize instruments
- Assist the dentist in patient treatment to keep patients as comfortable as possible throughout their dental visit
- Pass instruments in proper orientation
- Keep dentists operating field clear
- Patient education and instructions as directed by the dentist
- Perform disinfection and sterilization procedures
- Equipment care and maintenance
